Neil van Dokkum was born in South Africa. He graduated with an LLB and LLM whilst working for a leading firm of attorneys in Durban. He emigrated to Ireland in 2002 and retired from practice, taking up a full-time lecturing position.
He specializes in child protection law but has always been interested in the ‘law and the brain’, and he is now researching the area of disabilities as a socio-political construct aimed at marginalization rather than inclusion, and the law’s role in that construct.
Neil is very happily married to Fiona and they have two adult sons, Rory and Ian.
